Get Down With Charlotte de Witte and TUDOR!
Get to know TUDOR's latest ambassador through a raw an unfiltered discussion.
The daring universe of TUDOR just got a little louder with the addition of Charlotte de Witte. Want to get to know her a little better? We sat down with her to get her take on what it means to be daring, how she got her start, and where she's going in her own words.
Who is Charlotte de Witte?
I'm a techno DJ and producer from Belgium. I started playing in small clubs in Ghent as a teenager, back when I was still performing as Raving George, and I never really stopped. Today I tour the world, I run two labels, KNTXT and Époque, and I still get the same feeling in my stomach right before a set as I did at seventeen. Underneath all of it I'm just someone who fell in love with a dark room, a loud sound system and a crowd of strangers moving as one.
What is club culture?
Club culture is a place where you can be whoever you are, next to someone you've never met, and for a few hours none of the differences matter. It's freedom, it's community, it's a safe space for people who don't always find one elsewhere. It's also fragile, clubs are closing everywhere and we tend to only realise what they gave us once they're gone. That's why I made The Resistance, it's my love letter to club culture and a reminder that it's worth fighting for.
You're clearly into watches, seemingly always wearing one. Where does that come from?
My whole life is built around time. A set is counted in beats per minute, a tour is counted in flights and time zones, and I'm almost never in the same place two days in a row. A watch is the one constant in that, it's on my wrist in the booth, at the airport, at home. I love that something so small can be so precise and still be built to last a lifetime.
Why partner with TUDOR?
Because it felt natural. I only work with brands I would wear and believe in anyway, and TUDOR makes watches that are meant to be used, not kept in a safe. There's no showing off, just serious craft and a certain stubbornness about doing things properly. That's how I try to approach techno too, stripped down, honest, no shortcuts.
What does Born To Dare mean to you?
It means choosing your own path, even when it's the harder one. I chose a sound that wasn't the easy option, I changed my artist name when people told me it was a risk, I started my own labels instead of waiting for someone else to open the door. None of it felt like bravery at the time, it just felt like the only way to stay true to myself. Daring, for me, is not about being fearless, it's about being scared and doing it anyway.
